Northern Iowa UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club

Founded in 1960 by Les Hale, the UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club traditionally has drawn its membership from students with widely varying academic interests.

The Glee Club began producing and performing in the annual Christmas Variety Shows in 1978. With the 11th production of the shows in 1988, all performances have been sold out. In December of 1987, 1991 and 1996, the Glee Club was invited to sing with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra on "Christmas at Symphony." The 1987 and 1991 concerts were sold out with over 3,000 people in attendance each time. 5,200 people attended the two 1996 performances at the Young Arena. After a successful audition, the Glee Club performed on the 1990 concert series at the Cathedral of St. Cecilia in Omaha.

The chorus also has performed at other sites in Nebraska, Colorado and across the state of Iowa on annual tours. Members of the Glee Club have traveled to Europe every other year since 1980. During their past thirteen visits, concerts were performed at numerous locales in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, including performances at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in 1996, 1998, and 2004.

The UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club performed at St. Asaph's Cathedral on Monday, March 13, 2006. They cosidered this a critical concert as they regard Welsh choral singing is as some of the best in the world.

By every account, the Glee Club hit a homerun. Many in the audience were moved by the group's singing, with some saying it was the best singing they had ever heard. The mayor of the town, Barbara Rust, presented Dr. Barrett with town banner.
